SEM images and EDS analysis of fired discs with brick clay and SSA

The pore structure and chemical composition were evaluated with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) on brick discs after firing at 1030°C and 1050°C. SEM-EDS was carried out with a Quanta FEG 250 Analytical ESEM, and backscattered electron images (BSE) were taken to reveal the compositional difference in the specimens (difference in average atomic number). The samples were prepared by cutting discs in half and polishing in the direction transverse to the forming direction. The polished discs were cast in epoxy, and a carbon surface coating was applied.
